ARTS IN BAHIA

by mark Stevenson fuo

Bahia is art and art is Bahia. This state is where you can find bountiful amount of naturally gifted unknown talents in the world of arts. From children to adults, practically all Bahians have in them what the definition of art represents. Taking a walk around the city will unravel the magnificent artistic qualities that these people possess.

Graffiti of all kinds could be noticed on major roads, bridges, public schools, public walls and in local supermarkets.A trip to the historical center of town will also reveal the artistic expertise of this people. Here you will encounter, mainly young highly talented artists who will be willing to paint remarkable and unbelievable portraits under 10 minutes for just a token.

Clay and wooden sculptures which represent saints and gods especially in the catholic faith and Afro-Brazilian cults could be seen in most churches, temples and open markets. The tamborine that plays a very significant role in the music of Bahia is also carved by the sculptors that carve the wooden gods.

Women are not left out in the art in the State. They take the mantle of leadership as major potters, making different types of pottery ranging from cups for drinking water, cooking, water cooling and storage pots. Like that of the sculpture, some of these pots are also made in honor of Bahia dieties. A huge image of Christ was molded and is presently stationed at the Morro de Silencio in Nazare das Farinhas which is one of the towns where clay is found.Other cities where pottery are renowned activities are Feira dos Caxixis and Farinha de Copioba. Maragojipinho is where they are made and sold is large quantities. These works are mostly transported and sold to neighboring towns that do not have access to clay.

Men are principally responsible for the leather and bead works. The skin of animals like horses, goats and sheep are used to design things like hats, sandals, bags, belts, shoes, mats and leather cushions that come in different colors. Popular beads design with shells are made into pendants that have the inscriptions of human faces.

Blacksmith and calabash carvings are also part and parcel of the art in Bahia. The well carved round calabash that hangs on the tip of the Berimbau, the musical instrument used for the capoeira bout is a product of this carvings. The Blacksmiths make fashionable tools like hammers, knives, bow and arrows with their artistic knowledge and abilities.
