LEARNING PORTUGUESE FOR FOREIGNERS

“Learning Portuguese will not only give you an entry into Brazilian culture but many others, whether the Indian in the Amazon, African in Bahia or the German in the South. Concentrate on Brazilian Portuguese. If you have any grammars from Portugal throw them away. If you talk like Portuguese, Brazilians will laugh at you” – John Fitzpatrick.

“ According to many Portuguese people160 million Brazilians speak the language wrongly. Are all Brazilians illiterate? Would they all be bilingual if they had to learn Portuguese?” – A. Fabres Brazzil.com.

Most Brazilian Portuguese guide or phrase books center mainly on formal or standard Portuguese language which is a far cry from the day-to-day reality of most Brazilians. Authors of these books categorically shy away from the simple fact that, the average Brazilian on the street whose number supercedes the rich and comfortable are the ones travelers and tourists mostly run into during their day to day activities and most importantly these people sometimes have minute ideas or usually know next to nothing about the grammatical accuracy of the language talkless of using it correctly. These illiterates and semi- unlettered have their own medium of communication, which is almost completely different from what one encounters in the intellectual arenas.

Like any other language, Brazilian Portuguese which is flavored and garnished with slang and swear words is accompanied by grammar and all other linguistic ingredients that makes the language smooth, musical and romantic. In teaching travelers to Brazil Portuguese, we intend to deal with the fusion of the standard as well as the Peoples Brazilian Portuguese. This course which is basically for beginners and intermediate 1 learners of the language has been packaged to bring a lasting relieve and completely ease the long term frustrations that non- Portuguese travelers to Brazil have suffered in the past for having pinned their faiths on phrase books that only deal with standard and out dated Brazilian Portuguese.

The beauty of the language mostly lies in its contraction, dimunitive and superlative uses. Like American English, Brazilian Portuguese is decorated with contractions, which simplify the language. This course that also serves as a mini-guide to Brazil is armed with tools that breakdown the complexities of the language by the use of phonics, which make pronunciation which has always been perplexing for foreigners a piece of cake. .

Portuguese ranks sixth among the world's languages. It is spoken in five African countries namely Cape Verde, Mozambique, Sao Tome and Principe,  Angola and Guinea Bissau. It is also spoken in Portugal, Macua, East Timor and Brazil.

The Brazilian Portuguese which is very romantic in nature preferably tickle the fancy of most travelers to Portuguese speaking countries. If you are planning to visit or live in the touristy paradize of Brazil in the near future, now is the time to start putting your Portuguese together. Brazilians feel more at home with foreigners who can at least express themselves in basic Portuguese.
